Think fast – how many mundane, repetitive tasks do you perform at your job every single day? Now, imagine these tasks being whisked away from your to-do list, courtesy of invisible digital robots. Impossible? Well, not in the world of Robotic Process Automation (RPA).
RPA, a rapidly emerging technology, uses software robots or 'bots' to automate routine, rule-based tasks. The bots interact with systems just like humans: they log in, operate applications, enter data, and log out. Time-consuming tasks like payroll processing, report generation, data extraction, and order processing can all be automated away, freeing up human resources for more strategic roles.
The realm of RPA is flourishing with leaps and bounds. Recently, Gartner predicted that by 2021, 90% of large and midsize organizations will have at least one process supported by RPA. Forerunner companies are already leaping at this technology - take Ernst and Young, for instance. They welcome RPA as an employee and client enabler and have automated over 200,000 hours of mundane work in one year alone!
There is no doubt RPA offers a myriad of benefits: beyond productivity gains, it presents error reduction, improved compliance, and heightened customer satisfaction as employees are more available for customer interaction roles. However, it's not all rainbow and sunshine. Organizations deploying RPA must grapple with challenges - data security concerns, potential job policy changes, and the least explored - ethical issues of assigning human tasks to robots.
As we peer into the future, the canvas of RPA seems exciting yet blurry. Could RPA bots evolve to perform cognitive tasks that require human intellect? Will there be a day when humans and bots dine at the same table in the staff lounge? Thought-provoking, isn't it?
While we eagerly wait for these answers, one thing is clear: RPA is here to stay, and it’s time businesses explore this technology to harvest its low-hanging fruits to give a significant boost to their operational efficiency.
